What Is Natural Hair Care And Why You Should Care?

The term “natural hair care” is a foreign concept to most of us. The majority of adult women have treated their hair with chemicals as a way to achieve “perfect hair.” Yet, natural hair has the potential to look just as beautiful as hairstyles that have been exposed to dyes, relaxers, heat and more. Although natural hair care doesn’t involve chemical processing, regular hair care appointments are still a necessity.

Natural Hair Care Isn’t One Size Fits All

The most important thing to remember about natural hair is that each client is different. What natural hair means to one person may mean something totally different to another. For instance, a client may consider natural hair as not using a relaxer. Another client could define natural care as choosing products without harsh additives such as sulfates and parabens. Just because a person says they follow a natural hair care regiment, it doesn’t automatically mean they are using baking soda only to wash hair.

Educate On the Do’s and Don’ts of Natural Hair Care

When a client is new to natural hair care, she may not realize the changes her hair will go through. For one, using natural homemade shampoos will likely cause the hair to feel oily. Traditional shampoos typically remove oils from the hair and may have dried out the follicles. In many natural hair clients, there’s also a “growing pains” period of six months or so. During the first few months, hair won’t grow out in the natural pattern. If relaxers are avoided during the period, hair will eventually develop an even curl pattern that is less unruly. Limiting heat exposure is also an important part of natural hair care. Clients should rinse with cold water to avoid removing conditioning elements found in the hair follicles. Lower heat settings are preferred on any type of hair dryers or irons too.

Quarterly Hair Appointments Are a Must

Although natural hair clients may be seen less often than color appointments, they should come into a salon a minimum of every three months for at least a trim. Trims help maintain a healthy mane. A stylist is also critical to helping natural hair clients address any issues that may be going on such as dry scalp, dandruff and thinning hair.
